What is Juneteenth?

"After the Union Army captured New Orleans in 1862, slave owners in Confederate states migrated to Texas with more than 150,000 enslaved Black persons.  For 3 years, even after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved Black Americans in Texas remained in brutal bondage, immorally and illegally deprived of their freedom and basic dignity.  On June 19, 1865 — over 2 years after President Lincoln declared all enslaved persons free — Major General Gordon Granger and Union Army troops marched to Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas."  ~The White House (2022)

BIPOC Get Togethers

One of the most impactful additions to our Wellness Toolkit as Mainers of Color are creating opportunities to connect, talk, laugh, network, share a meal and just enjoy being together. The impact on our wellness feels immeasurable. Subscribe and join us on Zoom every 1st Sunday of the month.

Juneteenth Downeast

Juneteenth Downeast exists to give people of the African diaspora a place to connect, and opportunities to replenish that which was taken away. Whether through connection to the land, to water, to resources or to each other. May we find through this commemoration ways to be true to Ourselves, our History, and our Heritage. May we find ways to nourish who we are amidst that which is the best of us.
